Luxury Guest Room Essentials: How to Make Your Guests Feel Pampered and At Home
Last year, I visited a dear friend and her husband in their stunning new home high above the lake in Lugano, Switzerland. The views were bonkers and her home and art collection a design paradise, but what truly made my stay unforgettable were the thoughtful, yet simple touches she added to the guest room. One thing I’ll never forget? The giant bar of Toblerone she left on my bedside table—an unexpected, local treat that felt so personal and luxurious, and a sweet reminder of our high school years spent at boarding school in the country.

My friend also ensured I had plenty of space to unpack, with an empty closet and drawers just for me. These small, memorable details elevated the entire experience. Her hospitality inspired me to share these tips for creating a welcoming and luxurious guest room for your own home. Whether you're hosting for the holidays or any time of year, these ideas will help you provide an experience that your guests won’t soon forget.
1. Prioritize Comfort with Luxe Bedding
Invest in high-quality bedding that feels indulgent. White or neutral colors give the cleanest feel. Opt for plush duvets, extra pillows, and soft linens in natural fibers like cotton or linen. Give them options depending on whether they are hot or cold sleepers - offer a down duvet, but an alternative soft blanket for layering.
2. Incorporate Thoughtful, Local Amenities

One of the best ways to personalize your guest room is by offering something local and unique to your part of the world. Think of a regional candy, like my friend’s Toblerone, a locally made scented candle, or a little gift with your city/region’s name on it. These thoughtful touches make your guests feel especially welcomed.
3. Create a Hotel-Inspired Bathroom
If your guest room includes an ensuite, consider upgrading the space with spa-like features. Provide fresh towels (always white), a range of toiletries, and a plush bathrobe. Consider adding a towel warmer for an extra touch of luxury.
4. Add Personalized Touches

Incorporate artwork, books, or accessories that reflect your home's personality, but avoid clutter. Blend style with simplicity to keep the space restful yet personalized. If you have guests at your vacation home - supply some items that they may need but didn’t necessarily bring, like electrolyte drink mixes for a mountain home or an insulated tumbler for the lake house.
5. Choose Functional, Chic Furnishings

Make sure guests have ample storage and a seat. Give them plenty of space to unpack by clearing out closets and drawers. The last thing you want is for your guests to feel like they're invading a space cluttered with your own belongings.
6. Keep Them Hydrated

Of course offering water for the night is a given, but I like to have small bottles of both still and sparkling and I always have a bedside water carafe with a tumbler on top. Present it all on a nice tray and that will really elevate their experience!
7. Don’t Forget the Details
Ensure small comforts like a full-length mirror, luggage rack, or blackout curtains are included to meet your guests' needs. These thoughtful extras can make their stay feel much more like home with all its comforts.
